How IS Toughness Made?

Toughness is an attribute within a person that needs to become a powerful force. There is internal, external and spiritual forms of strength. Not all types of toughness can be seen with the naked eye and cannot always be tested by quantifiable means. Skeptics typically become disinterested unless results can be quantified. I write to you now so that you know that toughness goes beyond anything that can be measured. Even if it cannot be tested does not mean it should be left alone!

Toughness is understood by direct experience. It is a maturity that is developed by literally going through the hard times whether they be by life, training and/or both. Any person who has been through hard times in their life has a disinct look and salty appeal to them. Reality brings toughness into the open or crushes the person who needs to build it. How exactly does a person build toughness when they have none or very little?

Toughness is built by understanding basic rules you place upon yourself and also living in accordance to societal law. The basic rules for example could include never allowing anyone to penetrate your mind and eliminating negative people from your life. These acts will create and inspire a new toughness in you. Being tough means being able to make difficult decisions and dealing with them. This means no hiding, no exuses, and no regrets. When you face things head on, you are tough.

Sometimes there are training practices that can induce toughness. I have found cold weather training and long time under tension marathon sets to be the most beneficial in building toughness. Both of these factors ask a person to bear what he knows will be painful, uncomfortable and be difficult from the very start.

Being tough is something that is worn on a persons soul.

Sincerely,

Dave Lemanczyk, M.S.P.E
