KEG Lifting

Lifting a keg is more difficult than lifting a traditional weighted implement such as a barbell or pair of dumbbells. The main reason is that the outer shell of the keg is solid while the inside is live with fill (liquid/solid). Fill moves when the outer shell is manipulated (keg lifting). For example, liquid has the most shift inside a keg during lifting. As a result, any/all exercises performed with a keg that has been water-filled will be much more difficult to complete. Even solids such as rice, sand, dirt, and lead shot have there own specific feel. From personal experience, I can tell you how the solid fills (rice, dirt, etc) seem to have a clearly defined heavy shift in momentum whereas the liquid is consisently shifting its momentum. The feel inside of the keg adds challenge and tremendous stress during tasks. There is no moment of rest when you are gripping a beer keg with live weight inside of it. This reason and many more once again prove that nobody gets into lifting and training with a keg unless they are serious about getting strong!

It is very important to learn how to manipulate a keg for overall fitness and the type of strength life requires.

Sincerely,

Dave Lemanczyk, M.S.P.E
